Chronic kidney disease is a silent epidemic, afflicting 15% of Americans and costing the U.S. healthcare system a staggering $130 billion annually. Many limitations complicate treatment, including a lack of disease detection methods, a lack of strategies for delivering new classes of therapeutics, and a national shortage of transplants. Through a multidisciplinary biomaterials science and engineering, molecular biology, and kidney physiology perspective, our mission is to transform kidney medicine by engineering tiny, nanoscale technologies that can:
SENSE: detect kidney disease at early, treatable timelines
DELIVER: facilitate therapeutic delivery to the kidneys
AUGMENT: enhance kidney function and longevity
More broadly, we seek to understand and leverage the interplay between materials physicochemical properties and biology for applications across multiple tissue types.
